Safety & Range Rules

At LRPC, safety is our top priority.
Every member is responsible for range safety: we are all responsible for maintaining a safe environment.

Our Safety Culture

We are self-policing. Every member is empowered and encouraged to:

  • Stop unsafe actions when it is safe to do so

  • Offer a courteous reminder or correction of rule violations

  • Report any safety concerns or incidents to the Club Administrator

This shared vigilance allows us to operate safely without full-time Range Safety Officers—our members to look out for each other.

Violations can result in disciplinary action, including loss of membership.

Visitor Policy

LRPC is a members-only club. Visitors are welcome when:

  • Attending a public match (designated range only*)

  • Accompanied by a member as a supervised guest

  • On a scheduled facility tour arranged through club administration

*For safety and security, unescorted exploration of the facility is not permitted. If you're interested in seeing more of our facilities, please contact us to schedule a tour.

Critical Safety Concepts

Understanding "Safe Condition"

A firearm is in safe condition when:

  • Unloaded (magazine removed for semi-autos; chamber empty)

  • Action open with empty chamber indicator (ECI) installed

  • Finger off the trigger

  • Barrel pointed in a safe direction (pointed down range or pointed up)

Hot Range vs. Cold Range

All rifle and pistol ranges use a Hot/Cold light system for safety:

🔴 HOT RANGE (Red Light)

  • Shooting and firearm handling allowed

  • You may load, shoot, and handle firearms at the firing line only

  • No one may go forward of the yellow line

  • Firearms behind the red line must remain unloaded and in a safe condition

🟢 COLD RANGE (Green Light)

  • No shooting or firearm handling

  • All firearms must be on the bench, unloaded in a safe condition, barrels pointed downrange

  • You may go forward to service targets or retrieve brass

  • Absolutely no gun handling anywhere on the range

Changing Range Status

When changing from HOT to COLD — or — COLD to HOT:

  1. Range status must be annouced clearly three times

  2. ALL shooters must verbally acknowledge

  3. Everyone must verify conditions are met before proceeding
