Opening HTML files in Safari

Information as of 9/5/2026:

On macOS (Mac)

Safari on Mac fully supports opening and rendering local .html files. You can open them using any of the following methods:

  • Drag and drop the file directly onto the Safari app icon or into an open browser window.

  • Right-click (Control-click) the file, hover overOpen With, and select Safari.

  • Open Safari, click File > Open File... in the top menu bar, and choose your document.

Note: If your Mac prevents you from opening it due to a permissions error, you may need to grant Safari "Full Disk Access" under your Mac's System Settings > Privacy & Security.

On iOS and iPadOS (iPhone & iPad)

Historically, you could use the Share > Open in Safari option from the Files app, but Apple has blocked Safari from opening local or iCloud-stored HTML files directly due to evolving security restrictions.
