Shotgun League

The LRPC shotgun league is a year-round opportunity to learn, practice, and compete in 3 different shotgun disciplines: Skeet, Trap, and 5-Stand.

We welcome all: club members, Blue Cards, and the public. Shooters can be of all levels, beginners to advanced and will find our group welcoming and easygoing. We especially welcome new shotgun shooters who want to gain skills and learn to shoot more accurately on moving targets (clays). There is always a helpful, experienced shooter available to guide and assist newcomers.

Times and Fees

We meet on Thursday afternoons, starting at 2:30 pm and we shoot until about 5:30 pm. On most Saturdays there is also an opportunity to shoot with us in the mornings (at 9 am). The Thursday meetings are firm, the Saturdays may be more irregular. Everyone who comes can leave their e-mail contact and will then receive a weekly email with league information about the upcoming week.

Any round of practice in Trap, Skeet, or 5-stand costs $5 for a club member and Blue Cards, and $6 for all others. That includes a full round of targets = 25 clays to reimburse the club for clay cost, machine repairs, and maintenance.

A league typically consists of 8 rounds of scored shooting, plus one meeting where we have a “fun shoot”, plus a slice of pizza and a soft drink at the conclusion of each league.

For a full league we currently charge $55 for club members and Blue Cards, and $65 for all others.

When you come to participate on a Thursday or a Saturday shoot you do not have to join an ongoing league. You can just shoot for fun and practice. However, all shooters will shoot in groups of 5 (a “squad”) and the rules are the same whether or not you join a league.

The Shotgun Disciplines

The different clay target shotgun disciplines each develop different shooting skills. The summaries below provide a quick overview along with official resources for further reading.

Note: We currently have no field course for Sporting clays and thus cannot offer this at the time.

Skeet

Overview: Shooters move through eight stations arranged in a semicircle while targets are launched from a high house and a low house. Targets cross in front of the shooter, emphasizing smooth gun movement, timing, and proper lead. A standard round consists of 25 targets.

Primary Skills: Crossing targets, swing, timing, target leads.

Trap

Overview: Shooters fire from five stations behind a single trap house. Targets are launched away from the shooter at varying angles. Trap is simple to learn but rewards consistency and precision.

Primary Skills: Rising targets, quick target acquisition, consistency.

5-Stand

Overview: A compact version of sporting clays. Shooters rotate through five stations and engage a variety of target presentations including crossing, incoming, outgoing, rabbit, chandelle, and doubles.

Primary Skills: Adaptability, multiple target presentations, hunting-style shooting.

Iron-Man

Overview: Something more “unofficial” we do here at our club. This league lasts 9 weeks total and consists of 3 weeks trap, 3 weeks skeet, and 3 weeks 5-Stand. The results are combined. Iron Man league fees are an additional $5, or $6 respectively.

Primary Skills: Broadest variety of targets and allround shotgun shooting skills.

Rules and Safety

Details vary some by each discipline but here is what they have in common:

  1. We allow different caliber shotguns: 12G, 16G, 20G, 28G, or 410 can be brought.

  2. Shot sizes from 7 ½ (largest) to 10 ½ (smallest) only are allowed.

  3. Magnum loads and 3 ½” shells are not allowed while shooting Trap, Skeet or 5 Stand.

  4. All new shooters or guests are required to contact the league organizer on the range when they arrive.

  5. Shotguns transported from your vehicle to the range must be unloaded. If not cased, the actions must be open.

  6. Place your unloaded gun in the gun rack provided until ready for use.

  7. When moving from station to station at various ranges, your gun shall remain unloaded with the breach or action open until your turn to shoot.

  8. No guns shall be loaded except when the shooter is STANDING in the shooting station OR APPROPRIATE CONCRETE PAD. NO LOADING WHILE WALKING TO THE CONCRETE PAD OR SHOOTING STATION.

  9. Loading more than two (2) rounds at a time is never permitted. In Trap, you may only load one round.

  10. No snap-caps shall be allowed on shotgun ranges.

  11. No working on guns, behind the shotgun ranges.

  12. And of course, NEVER point your shotgun in the direction of any person at anytime!

SAFETY WARNING: TRAP AND FIVE-STAND MACHINES

It has been noted that the trap and five-stand machines have been left armed or improperly loaded.

TO ENSURE SAFETY, ONLY TRAINED INDIVIDUALS ARE AUTHORIZED TO HANDLE THESE MACHINES.

Shotgun shooters, including new members, who want to learn how to load and safely operate the machines should contact Mike Pitsikoulis, Peter Germroth, or George Kloiber for instruction.
